[su_dropcap]H[/su_dropcap]Have you ever heard that saying, “You are what you eat”? Well, this couldn’t be more true when looking to get that healthy, dewy (not shiny!) summer glow all year long. The foods we put in our bodies can either make us feel worn down, our skin to be dry and washed out, or make us feel energized and our skin to be well-hydrated and vibrant! Which would you choose? In this post, we will be talking about four steps to getting that gorgeous summer glow all year long.

Which would you choose? In this post, we will be talking about four steps to getting that gorgeous summer glow all year long.

[su_dropcap]G[/su_dropcap]Growing up, I always thought the more tan I was, the more pretty I was, which meant a lot of time out in the sun (without sunscreen… yikes!). I also had the unfortunate opportunity of battling acne for most of my tween, adolescent, and young adult years.

Needless to say, I was always craving a more smooth and brighter complexion, and I wanted to be able to go places without makeup on and feel confident in my skin. Is that too much for a girl to ask?

But with the time spent in the sun and the many medications I was on to help cure my acne, I was always hiding under layers of foundation, concealer, and powder.

[su_dropcap]A[/su_dropcap]About a year ago, I began to take a real hard look at my diet and what I was fueling my body with on a regular basis, as well as my lifestyle as a whole.

I began educating myself on how to better live a healthy lifestyle, and have since made several changes in my eating and daily habits that have made a huge (and unexpected) difference in my skin! And people actually notice.

Based on my own personal experience and a little help from the health experts, here are four steps to get that beautiful summer glow we all crave!

Drink more water. I know, I know. You are probably so tired of hearing this, but I would be lying if I said it wasn’t a crucial element to healthy skin! Your body is made up of about 60% water. That’s over half of your body composition, in water alone. Have you ever noticed when your skin is dry and almost chalky looking? That’s because you aren’t drinking enough water my friends! For tips on how to get more water throughout the day,

Get enough sleep. According to the National Sleep Foundation, it is recommended that adults get 7-9 hours of sleep a night. Easier said than done, right? With so much to do in a given day, it can be hard to “turn it off” at night. And by turning it off, I mean your screens and your brain! Help yourself out by setting a calming nighttime routine and aiming to turn all screens off at least an hour before bedtime.

Eat your fruits and veggies. I’m not trying to be your mama here, but there’s a good reason our mothers wanted us to eat our peas and broccoli! There are so many good-for-you nutrients found in fruits and vegetables that simply can’t be found in a multivitamin alone.

These specific antioxidant-rich foods have been known to promote healthy, glowing skin:

  • Carrots, apricots, squash and other yellow and orange fruits and vegetables
  • Spinach and other green leafy vegetables
  • Tomatoes
  • Beans, peas and lentils
  • Omega-3 rich foods, such as: salmon, mackerel (or other fatty fish), olive oil and chia seeds
  • Nuts

Stress less and laugh more! Do you have a friend or family member who makes you laugh? You know, the deep belly laugh? Spend more time with him or her. I know when I’m busy and stressed, it’s important for me to take a look at my priorities and spend quality time with family and friends.

Other ways to stress less and laugh more: take a yoga class, have a spa day (it will totally be worth the few extra bucks!), set up a regular coffee or happy hour date with girlfriends, watch a funny movie or TV show and if all else fails, watch this video. You’re welcome.

I know what you’re thinking. Drink more water, get eight hours of sleep, eat more produce and laugh more – sure, in a perfect world! I have found that making small changes here and there can add up to big results.

Start your day with a glass of water, try to go to bed 30 minutes earlier than you’re used to, reach for a handful of nuts instead of that bag of chips, and take one day a week to spend quality time with family and friends – unplugged.

These are all simple changes that will get you headed towards a healthier lifestyle and that gorgeous summer glow all year long!
